The Polar Explorer Programme

« Return to News

23rd Oct 2016

The Natural Environment Research Council is funding the design, construction and build of the new polar research vessel, which will launch in 2019. The vessel has been named after Sir David Attenborough just days before his 90th birthday.
The government will invest up to £1 million in a new “Polar Explorer” programme, which will run over the next four years, to inspire the scientists, engineers and explorers of the future. The programme will use the construction and launch of the ship to engage young people through the science, mathematics and engineering associated with the vessel following on from the success of the Tim Peake resources.

There will be lots of resources to engage children with the project linking to the construction of the ship and its remote vehicles, and to the important scientific research that will be carried out at the two poles of the Earth.
