Egg-citing Investigations - part 1

Cathy Layton

We've collected a number of investigations all linked to eggs to get you into the Easter mood:

  1. Tooth decay - Egg shells in different types of drinks like milk, coke, fruit juice, cordial, plant based milks and water. Get the children to predict which one they will cause the most decay. How will the measure it? Drawings, photographs? Great observation over time investigation linking to Y4 identify the different types of teeth in humans and their simple functions

  2. Insulating eggs – which materials would best protect ‘Humpty Dumpty’ when he falls off his wall. Remember to hard boil your free range eggs first. Linking to Y2 identify and compare the suitability of a variety of everyday materials, including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper and cardboard for particular uses

  3. Catapulting Eggs - same idea as above but this time also including objectives from the Year 5 Forces topic as you get the children to create a catapult to fling the hardboiled eggs in their protective shell. Links to Y5 explain that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling object and recognise that some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears, allow a smaller force to have a greater effect.
