What do moths eat?

Have you ever wondered what moths eat? And no, the answer is not your clothes as commonly thought. It’s a common myth that moths just eat clothes. In fact, only two species of moths (out of over 2,500 that occur in the UK) are regularly found in houses eating natural fabrics, and it’s not the adults doing the nibbling, it’s their caterpillars.

Moths are actually very varied in their diets, and, like butterflies, what they eat depends on what stage of their lifecycle they’re at. Head of Science Dr Richard Fox shares what’s on the menu for moths, and it might not always be what you think...

This is a great tie-in to both KS1 and KS2 Biology strand of the NC where they look at living things and their lifecycles. And with the nights drawing in you're more likely to see moths than butterflies.
